Complete Guide to Sightseeing
Around Mt. Daisen 大山

Mt. Daisen 大山 (1,729 m) is the highest peak in the Chugoku region of western Japan and the heart of Daisen-Oki National Park. Scène is located at approximately 600 m elevation on the mountain's northern flank, a 10-minute walk from the ancient stone approach to Daisenji Temple 大山寺. This guide covers the best attractions within a 45-minute drive of Scène — from sacred mountain trails and thatched-roof villages to a port city famous for manga monsters and some of the freshest seafood in Japan.

Around the Mountain — Within Walking Distance or 10 min by Car

Daisenji Temple 大山寺 & the Stone Approach

Founded in 718 CE (the second year of the Yoro era) by the monk Kinren, Daisenji Temple 大山寺 is a Tendai Buddhist temple that once commanded an army of 3,000 warrior monks. It remains the largest temple complex in the San'in region. From Scène, a 10-minute walk along the stone-paved approach (approximately 700 m) leads to the Niomon Gate, flanked by towering cedar trees estimated to be several hundred years old.

Beyond the main hall, a forest trail continues to the Oku-no-in Monjudo 奥之院文殊堂 — a hall dramatically cantilevered over a cliff face with sweeping views of the Daisenji village below. Admission to the temple grounds is free. Allow 30–40 minutes for a return walk to the main hall, or up to 1 hour to include Monjudo. The autumn foliage season (late October to early November) transforms the approach into a corridor of gold, crimson, and orange.

Access

10-minute walk (700 m) or 2-minute drive from Scène. Parking available near the approach entrance (free and paid options). Temple grounds open year-round; main hall hours 8:00–17:00.

Mt. Daisen Loop Road & the North Face Viewpoints

Route 45 (the Daisen Loop Road) begins just 5 minutes by car from Scène. Several pull-outs along the northern section offer dramatic views of the Daisen North Face 大山北壁 — a 500 m wall of volcanic rock unlike anything visible from the summit trail. Early mornings in summer and autumn, when mist pools in the valleys below, make for particularly atmospheric photographs. If you are planning to hike to the summit, the standard Natsu-yama Trail 夏山登山道 (round trip 4–5 hours) departs from the Daisen-ji parking area.

Masumizu Highland 桝水高原 — 15 min by Car

Fifteen minutes southeast of Scène, the Masumizu Highland 桝水高原 (930 m elevation) offers a chairlift ride to a panoramic viewpoint where the Sea of Japan, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and — on clear days — the Oki Islands are all visible. The observation area is open in summer (chairlift fare approximately ¥500 one way). A small farm stand sells soft-serve ice cream and fresh produce made from Daisen-area milk and vegetables.

In winter (December–March), the slope becomes the Daisen Ski Resort 大山スキー場, one of the most accessible ski areas in western Japan. Twelve runs of varying difficulty serve beginners through advanced skiers, with ski rental available on-site.

Mitsu Village 御机集落 — 25 min by Car

Roughly 25 minutes by car via the southern flank of Mt. Daisen, Mitsu Village 御机集落 is renowned throughout Japan as one of the most photogenic rural scenes in the country. Traditional thatched-roof farmhouses (kominka 古民家) are framed against the soaring south face of Mt. Daisen, and in autumn, harvested rice hung to dry on wooden racks (hazakake 稲架掛け) completes the tableau. The rice-planting period (May–June) and harvest period (September–October) attract the most visitors and photographers. The village itself has only a few dozen households; please keep to public paths and respect residents' privacy.

Kaike Onsen 皆生温泉 — 30 min by Car

Thirty minutes northwest of Scène on the coast of Yonago City, Kaike Onsen 皆生温泉 is San'in's largest seaside hot spring resort. The sodium chloride springs (source temperature 60–70°C) are believed to ease muscle fatigue and nerve pain. Several ryokan inns accept day-use bathers for ¥1,000–¥2,000, making it an ideal afternoon detour. The Sea of Japan sunsets from Kaike are particularly spectacular — the sun drops cleanly into the horizon rather than behind mountains.

Sakaiminato & the Mizuki Shigeru Road — 45 min by Car

Forty-five minutes by car (via the San'in Kinki Expressway to Sakaiminato IC), Sakaiminato 境港 is the birthplace of manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, creator of the beloved supernatural series GeGeGe no Kitaro. The Mizuki Shigeru Road 水木しげるロード (approximately 800 m long) runs from JR Sakaiminato Station and features 153 bronze statues of characters from the series. The adjacent Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum (admission: ¥860 for adults; open 9:30–17:00, no fixed day off) offers a deep dive into his life, wartime experience, and artistic legacy.

Sakaiminato is also one of Japan's major fishing ports. The port direct-sales market (Sakai Minato Chokubai Ichiba) sells freshly landed tuna, mackerel, flounder, and snow crab at competitive prices. The fish here — particularly benizuwai (red snow crab) and aji (horse mackerel) — sometimes appear on the menu at Scène, connecting your plate directly to the harbor.

Yonago City 米子 — 35 min by Car

Food & Sake in Yonago

Yonago 米子, the main city of western Tottori Prefecture, sits 35 minutes by car from Scène. Its dining district around Yonago Station offers Tottori wagyu beef (kuroge wagyu raised in the prefecture), shijimi clam soup made with bivalves from nearby Lake Shinji 宍道湖, and fresh sashimi from Sakaiminato. Two local sake breweries worth seeking out are Chiyomusubi 千代むすび (Sakaiminato; known for the Goriki rice variety) and Kumezakura 久米桜 (Yonago; uses groundwater filtered through Mt. Daisen).

Yonago Castle Ruins 米子城跡

Constructed in the early Edo period (early 17th century), Yonago Castle 米子城 no longer has standing towers, but its stone walls and 90-meter hilltop position yield panoramic views over Lake Nakaumi 中海, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and Mt. Daisen. The castle grounds are free to enter and are at their most festive during cherry blossom season (late March–early April).

Oki Islands 隠岐の島 — Ferry from Sakaiminato (approx. 2.5–3 hrs)

From Sakaiminato Ferry Terminal (45 minutes by car from Scène), the Oki Kisen ferry service connects to the four main islands of the Oki Islands 隠岐の島 archipelago: Nishinoshima (Beppu Port, approx. 2h30m), Ama-cho (Hishiura Port, approx. 3h), and Oki-no-shima (Saigo Port, approx. 3h10m). A high-speed passenger vessel (Rainbow Jet) covers the Saigo Port route in approximately 1h40m.

The Oki Islands are a UNESCO Global Geopark and the source of one of Japan's most prized seasonal delicacies: Oki Islands rock oysters 隠岐の岩牡蠣 (Crassostrea nippona). Unlike common Pacific oysters (harvested in winter), Oki rock oysters peak from June to August. Individual specimens regularly reach 15–25 cm in length and 300–800 g in weight, with a rich, creamy flavour shaped by the confluence of the warm Tsushima Current and cold deep-sea waters. These oysters are among the ingredients that appear in Scène's seasonal courses.
